...INTRODUCTION...
Deep in the Anamian forest lies a peaceful meadow. There the grass was sweet, wild flowers were swaying and the trees were dancing in the wind. A butterfly lazily flapped its wings, traveling in a slow, upwards circle. It was the picture of bliss.
Or so we think. Out of the blue, giant meteors dropped sending the human race to the brink of extinction. Only a few survive, but they are scattered around the world, unable to communicate with one another. If survival instincts don't start kicking in, our race as we know it will cease to exist entirely.

Jim was a happy boy before the extinction event. 8-years-old with loving parents and an older sister who looked after him and played with him after school. His teacher who was so proud of his writing skills she gave him an award. His friends Billy and Brian, twins who lived down the road and made forts with him whenever they were bored. His pet turtle named Norman who never did anything except sleep and eat. They're all dead now. Every last one of them. All killed by the meteors. Jim slowly drifted to consciousness in a pile of rubble. He could feel the slight tickle of blood trailing down the side of his head and his foot was caught under a heavy rock. A giant rock. A giant rock that was still smoldering a little, in some places. Images suddenly flooded his mind. His mother screaming. His father running into the fire. His sister being crushed by a boulder that appeared out of no where. It was too much for his young mind. The chunk of meteor that had trapped his leg was cutting into his skin and slowly crushing his bones. The images wouldn't stop playing over and over and over again. There was nothing he could do to stop the hysterical sobs that began to shake his frail body.

Being used to living with parents who to put it in a polite manner of speaking were Jesus freaks (not in too much of a bad way) and always fearing that the "end of the world is near!" The young 16-year-old Nellie Creed was well prepared. She got split off from her parents when the meteor hit, so she didn't know where they were. Her basement was full of food, and water (even gas masks) but the small essentials she would need were destroyed. Nellie decides to scavenge amongst the ruins of the previous city that was once the shining glory in it's time. She remembered vividly what it used to look like always husseling, and busseling with people, cars, and all kinds of fresh items on display. Now all that greeted her was the still noise of nothing, the smell of rot, and decay all around her, and collapsed buildings that seemed to stretch as wide as the eyes could see. When she hears a soft cry cautiously she follows the sound finding a little boy stuck in the rubble. Relief floods her because finally she doesn't feel so alone.

Jim's body was wracked with sobs as he grieved for his dead family. He remembered seeing his house shattering into a thousand pieces after a giant flaming rock landed on it. He remembered running to the woods, unable to make it to their relative safety in time. He remembered the sky turning a hellish red and flaming bits of rock raining down like hail. He remembered and cried. He cried out the feeling of loss, the painful hollowness in his heart. He cried and cried until he became aware of another person. A girl about his sister's age was rushing towards him.

She had to act quickly knowing at any moment in time more rocks could crumble on him or even her. Instant death. Still she wasn't used to this so it was agonizing as she frantically looked around for something, anything to help. Trying to keep a reassuring expression she speaks to the boy whilst searching. "I'm going to find something to wedge in there and get you out." Feeling an urge to reassure the young child she adds," Everything's going to be ok." Her eyes spot a broken pipe amongst the rubble.

The sound of the girls' voice shocked Jim into silence. For some reason, he found he couldn't think of anything he wanted to say to her, but also no longer wanted to cry. The pain in his leg had numbed to a dull throbbing. His mind went blank, almost devoid of any thought what so ever, as he watched her scurrying about him. He offered no help, no words of any sort. Simply watched in silence, with a far off look on his face.

Nellie wasn't really expecting him to speak after all he was just a little kid. Vice versa she'd be acting the same way whether she was a child or not. She grabbed for the pole, but it resisted, pulling harder she managed to get it out. Walking back over to him she looked for an opening to lift up the rock with. She found one but it was small and dangerously close to his ankle. She winced wondering if he would ever be able to use that leg again, pushing those thoughts aside she carefully got the pole in place. "When I say 'now' crawl out of there, ok?" Around them small rocks were crumbling, and sweat formed on her forehead. She'd have to push to make this work and use as much muscle as she could muster. She heaved still trying to be careful and when she felt the pole was safely in place she yelled, "Now!"

Jim watched in silence as the girl pulled a metal pipe from the wreckage of his father's tool shed. He remembered now what had happened to him after the burning rocks had fallen from the sky. He was running to the woods, where his mother had screamed for him to go, when the big oak tree with his tree house inside it crashed in front of him, almost impaling him on its branches. He had run to the tool shed and hit there. Then he woke up like this. Jim shook his head, trying to rid himself of the images, trying to focus on what the girl was saying to him. She startled him when she yelled. Then the numbness in his leg was gone, replaced by searing pain that ripped through his ankle, up through his leg and into his stomach. He screamed in pain and reflexively pulled his foot into his chest, coddling his leg as he wailed in agony.

Ok so obviously she underestimated this, hoping that the pain wouldn't be as severe as it was led on to be. Luckily he was out of harms way, but Nellie didn't feel safe near the wreckage. She had the right tools to help his leg, but everything was back in her basement. She had three options here either run back, and hope she could return before nightfall, bring him back with her and hope he could toughen out the pain or leave him for someone else to worry about. She firmly crossed out option number three. She tries to sound as soothing as possible, "It know it hurts and I know all you want to do is lay there, but if we don't move now I can't help you and I can't help take the pain away. I can carry you so you don't have to walk on that leg." She kept up a courageous act but inside she felt desperate. She knew that with the world as bad as it is that some other possible survivors wouldn't be as kind to the boy as she was. Not to mention risks of wild animals on the prowl for easy prey. the sun she noted was beginning to turn that bright color signaling noon was approaching and fast.

Jim could tell the girl didn't want to take him with her. He was desperate to stay with her, though. He wouldn't know what to do otherwise, since his entire family was gone. So he looked up at her worried face with big eyes and nodded his consent, holding out his arms for her to carry him.

Nellie reached down for him being careful of his leg and calculating the blood on his head that by now looked dry enough. She figured soon she would hear his cries of pain , so she gritted her teeth adjusting him so she could pick him up easier in her arms thinking it would be easier on his leg if she held him bridal style. For a kid he wasn't too heavy, but still packed a punch. Still being careful she weaved her way out of the rubble soon finding the cracked sidewalk, she walked as fast as she would allow on herself and him while speaking words of reassurance.

(Jim)othy Anthony Bates wrapped his arms around the girl's neck as she carried him, crying softly into her shoulder. He could feel the energy leaving his body, though, and fast. Soon he had no tears left to shed and lay quietly, resting his blood stained cheek on her shoulder. He wondered where her family was. Were they killed by the meteors too? Did she have a little brother, like him, only he got crushed instead of her? He wondered where she was when it happened. How did she escape the flaming boulders unscathed? She seemed pretty smart. She probably saw them coming and hid someplace safe, like a cave or a wolf's den in the woods. He focused on these musings and er comforting words to distract himself from the jolting pain that shot p his leg with every step she took. He felt sorry that she had to carry him; he felt stupid now for hiding by the shed. He should have gone around the oak tree and continued to the forest like hew as told.
