Nellie was getting tired and the weight of him as well as the hot sun wasn't doing good for her T-shirt which by now was covered in sweat, still she persisted and they managed to reach her half destroyed house. She moved around broken furniture and caved in walls reaching part of the house that wasn't destroyed leading them slowly down the stairs . Her heart was beating rapidly and she laid the boy down on a thin piece of carpet once more reminding her why she went outside to begin with. She rubbed her arms as they ached ,and she drank a water bottle only partially satisfying her dry lungs. She brought another one over to him, handing it over now taking the time to study his wounds. Thoughtfully she asked, "So what's your name? Mine is Nellie Creed, but go ahead and call me Nellie if you want to. " She looked around for her first aid kit, anything else useful.

Jim curled into a ball the second she put him on the floor. It was all he could do to keep a straight face, but knew the girl needed him to be strong, for her sake. He thought Nellie was a nice name. When she asked for his, he only shut his eyes tightly and tucked his head under his arm, not intentionally ignoring her, but doing so all the same.

She found the first aid and most of the things were basic, but she stopped talking when he didn't reply. She picked up a pain killer and reached over touching his shoulder. "This will help the pain for now." She held out a tiny pill. His leg looked like a mess, but she wasn't sure to what extent the damage had done. She had some bandages she could wrap it in and thankfully disinfection just in case something else got in there. She knew he didn't want to talk because of what happened, so she didn't pressure him to. Not being used to siblings since she was an only child for that matter she couldn't do much else to help besides clean him up and help as best she could.

Jim's leg went numb again when Nellie poured some sort of blue liquid on it, so he sat up and considered the room the were in. It was a regular looking living room with cerulean colored walls and beige furniture. One of the walls had been ripped down when the other side of the house collapsed, and the sky was visible along with the deep green forest in the background. The forest he was supposed to run to. Jim shook his head to stop the images from flashing through his head yet again. 'Okay,' he thought to himself, 'Nellie deserves an answer. I shouldn't have ignored her when she asked--she's been so nice to me...' He noticed a layer of black soot covering his white sneakers. It took him a moment to realize the soot had come from the carpet underneath him. Something had been burning and left the black ashes on Nellie's floor. perfect. Using his index finger, he carefully drew the letters his mother had taught him much before his teacher tried to. When he was finished, he tapped on Nellie's knee, then indicated his work and purposefully poke his own chest. 'Jim. My name is Jim,' he hoped she would understand.

She stared down at the soot squinting to see what he wrote. She nodded understanding and feeling sad for him. "Nice to meet you Jim." Even though the circumstances could have been better. She didn't want to say those words aloud, she cleaned up all the blood on his leg and face. Wrapping his head securely just in case the blood would flow again. It wasn't easy but she got him as cleaned up as possible and kept pain killers nearby just in case he needed any more. There was one notebook lying near them and half a pencil. She gave it to him, "For you to speak to me. " Then she sat Indian style next to him. One lock of her long messy auburn hair fell into her blue eyes. Her mother used to always say she was unique because of having two gold rings around her eyes instead of one, and whenever she asked people what color eyes she had they'd all say a different shade of blue (even turquoise before!) So she'd just give up and say they were just blue. She brushed her hair aside smiling half-halfheartedly, "are you hungry?"

Jim smiled, happy that Nellie understood, at least to some extent. He accepted the writing utensils gratefully, thankful for the familiarity. He clutched the notebook and pencil in his arms as he watched Nellie busy herself with his leg, eyes wide at the strange sight.

His silence made her uncertain, but her stomach grumbled food once more coming up to mind. It hadn't been that long after the meteors struck so food was not scarce soon however she feared it would be. A refrigerator was present but the power died out so she grabbed things to make sandwiches and returned to Jim when she was done she handed one over. "Here." She didn't know how long the refrigerator would last, she hopped for a long long time, but she had a feeling that would not happen. She'd use it as much as she could.

Jim nodded his thanks and accepted the sandwich gratefully. He hadn't felt hungry before, but the sight of food made his stomach start to grumble irritably. He took a bite and chewed the already warm cheese and meat thoughtfully. He set the wrinkled notebook on his knee and began to draw. He worked steadily for 15 minutes, methodically erasing and redrawing until the image matched the picture he remembered in his head.

She didn't want to intrude, but she was curious of what he was so intently working on. Trying to contain her curiousty she busied herself sorting out the remaining food, and water they had enough for a month or two then they'd have to start looking. Still they were low on other things, but she'd wait for tomorrow morning to scavenge again. It was already to late to go outside. Even though the walls were thick she could hear the sound of coyote's or maybe were they wolves? outside. The city was never known for wild animals, but it wasn't much of a city anymore.

It still wasn't exact... He might be a good writer, but drawing had never been his strong suit. The lines were all too wobbly and his circles weren't exact. The images themselves were actually pretty close, but then they had been simplistic symbols to begin with. He wasn't sure what had caused the sudden urge to copy the image down, but he was glad he had done it. It was comforting, in a way, to see it in his hands again. Even though what it signified was horrific and meant the end of everything and everyone he knew. Everyone... His mother... His father... His sister... A stabbing pain ripped through the exact middle of his chest and Jim doubled over again in agony. He couldn't stand the thought of his family without this--the most awful sorrow he had ever before experienced. He roughly shoved the archaic drawing away from him. It and it alone had signaled the end of their lives. The end of his own. The end of almost the entire human race. And that was only so far. There was so much left to do, so much he knew would depend on his actions, but he couldn't bear to bring himself to his feet, let alone back out into the forest. For the time being, all he would do was grieve for his lost family. He could ignore the drawing for the night, at least...

She looked at the now alone drawing and she gingerly picked it up. She didn't understand it, all that made sense was the meteor drawing. Furrowing her eyebrows she put the paper back on the ground and knelt by Jim who looked like he was in pain. "What's wrong?" She asked softly putting her hand on his arm as she looked down at him. She continued, "I think we should both get some sleep, it's been a big day." Yeah it has, "And we'll put a rain check on everything o.k.?" She repeated her father's words. He liked to use that as a saying. Basically meaning put everything to halt for the moment.

Jim listened to Nellie's words, but didn't acknowledge them. He knew that was rude, but he simply didn't have the energy or willpower to deal with pleasantries at the moment. She was trying to comfort him, but instead only succeeded in distracting him from the goal at hand. He was glad when she suggested they sleep. If she fell asleep, then it would truly be as if he was alone and he could grieve in actual peace. He wasn't sure how much sleep he would end up getting, but that wasn't the important thing. The important thing was that he needed to accept the loss of his family tonight, for there was too much that needed to be done tomorrow and he could not be distracted or even more bad things would happen. He closed his eyes and breathed deeply and evenly, encouraging Nellie to think he was asleep and do so herself.
